Gasoline prices keep climbing for Metro AtlantansExpect to pay more for Memorial Day weekend drivesBy STAFF REPORTPublished on: 05/18/08
Metro Atlanta gas prices are nearing the $3.80 mark as crude oil prices continue their upward march.
Sunday's average for regular in the metro area was nearly $3.79 per gallon, which tracks motorist reports.
RELATED: • •
That's up from $3.66 one week ago and $3.42 one month ago.
Crude oil jumped $2.17 on Friday to another record close of $126.29, despite news that Saudi Arabia had boosted its oil output by 300,000 barrels a day and U.S. government plans to stop adding to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Both moves were designed to allay concerns about an overheated oil market that's squeezing motorists and inflating the prices of all sorts of goods.
Neither appeared to have any effect on the markets, however.
The reason for the disconnect has little to do with political decisions in Washington or Riyadh, and everything to do with market expectations. The Saudi production increase was seen in the market as minuscule, and no one expected the suspension of shipments to the U.S. government's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to have much impact on supplies.
More important, the traders placing the bets expect prices to just keep moving higher.
Goldman Sachs, one of the world's most influential investment banks, underscored that sentiment Friday when it hiked its oil price forecast for the second half of the year to $141 a barrel, up from $107 previously. Analysts at the bank argue that the oil market is undergoing a "structural repricing" that will continue to play out for some time to come.
James Cordier, president of Liberty Trading Group in Tampa, Fla., agreed that the moves by both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia were "insignificant" and would do little to dent the rally in oil prices. Like a number of other analysts, he believes prices are rising not because of a speculative bubble, but simply reflect finite supply and soaring global demand.
Crude's latest surge comes a week before the Memorial Day holiday, the traditional start of the summer driving season, suggesting that retail gas prices still have further to rise.

...WTF?...Tornado Hits Atlanta

...After being in the upper 70's two weeks ago, followed by snow flurries and 40 degrees last week, Atlanta gets a Tornado....

Two people killed as Atlanta struck by tornado
Updated Sat. Mar. 15 2008 10:14 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Atlanta remains in a state of emergency after a tornado struck late Friday night, leaving rubble all over the city and thousands of people without power.

The twister came through the city at speeds of up to 200 kmh, and tore through 10 km of the dowtown core.

Emergency crews sifting through damaged homes found the bodies of two people in separate locations in the region.

There were more storms Saturday throughout Georgia, killing one person in Polk County and another in Floyd County, both near the Alabama line. Storms in South Carolina and Alabama left thousands without electricity.

In addition to the two fatalities, Friday night's storm left 27 injured.

The streets around downtown Atlanta landmarks such as the Georgia Dome, Phillips Area, the CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park were also littered with glass and other types of rubble. Power lines were downed, affecting about 19,000 customers.

Judy Pal, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta police, said that about 350 emergency personnel were trying to clear the streets of debris before the second storm hits the city.

"We could have some problems with buildings that are already under stress," Pal said, noting that one building has already collapsed.

Pal said the cost of the storm will be "enormous."

On Friday, a tornado warning was issued for downtown Atlanta just eight minutes before the storm hit, but there was no warning for spectators inside the Georgia Dome watching play in the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament.

"Ironically, the guy behind me got a phone call saying there was a tornado warning," fan Lisa Lynn said. "And in two seconds, we heard the noise and things started to shake. It was creepy."

The Fiberglas fabric roof started to ripple, catwalks swayed and insulation fell upon the court during overtime in the Mississippi State-Alabama game.

Fans headed to the exits, and teams to the locker rooms.

"I thought it was a tornado or a terrorist attack," said Mississippi State guard Ben Hansbrough, whose team won 69-67.

The game was delayed by an hour, and the roof was left with at least two visible rips. A later game was postponed.

Play between the NBA's Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Clippers at a different facility about 800 metres away wasn't really disrupted.

Downtown events for Saturday in Atlanta were cancelled, including the St. Patrick's Day parade.

If the Atlanta event is confirmed as a tornado, it will be the first to hit a U.S. city's downtown since Aug. 12, 2004 in Jacksonville, Fla. Atlanta itself hasn't had a tornado strike inside the city since 1975.

"The storms that produce tornados don't really care if there's a city there or not," Kourounis said. "Nature is very unpredictable."

Black students ordered to give up seats to white children
Status of Red River Parish bus driver is unknown.
August 24, 2006

COUSHATTA -- Nine black children attending Red River Elementary School were directed last week to the back of the school bus by a white driver who designated the front seats for white children.

The situation has outraged relatives of the black children who have filed a complaint with school officials.

Superintendent Kay Easley will meet with the family members in her office this morning.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also is considering filing a formal charge with the U.S. Department of Justice. NAACP District Vice President James Panell, of Shreveport, said he would apprise Justice attorneys of the situation this week. He's considering asking for an investigation into the bus incident and other aspects of the school system's operations, including pupil-teacher ratio as it relates to the numbers of white and black children, along with a breakdown of the numbers of black and white teachers employed.

"If the smoke is there, then there's probably fire somewhere else," Panell said in a phone interview from New Orleans. "At this point, it is extremely alarming. We fought that battle 50 years ago, and we won. Why is this happening again?"

Easley would not comment much on the allegations Wednesday, saying it is a personnel issue. She acknowledged that she has investigated the claim. And she confirmed that the bus driver did not run her route Wednesday, nor would she today.

Asked if the driver would work for the rest of the year, Easley said, "I'm not going to answer the questions. "» You're getting all that you're going to get from me. I'm sorry."

Red River Elementary School Principal Jamie Lawrence tried to rectify the seating situation when it was brought to her attention. But it was ultimately handled at the Central Office, Patricia Sessoms said.

Sessoms aunt, Iva Richmond, is the mother of two of the children, ages 14 and 15, and foster parent to three others, ages 5, 6 and 10. Janice Williams, who is the mother of the other four children, is Richmond's neighbor. All nine children catch the bus at a stop on Ashland Road.

Sessoms will join Richmond and Williams in their meeting with Easley today. Sessoms said they would ask for bus driver Delores Davis' immediate termination. Davis, who originates her bus route in Martin, has called Richmond to apologize, Sessoms said. A message left on Davis' answering machine late Wednesday afternoon was not immediately returned.

After Richmond and Williams filed complaints with the School Board, Transportation Supervisor Jerry Carlisle asked Davis to make seat assignments for her passengers, Sessoms said.

"But she still assigned the black children to the back of the bus," she added.

And the nine children had to share only two seats, meaning the older children had to hold the younger ones in their laps.

A new solution reached Monday by School Board officials has a black bus driver driving across town to pick up the nine black children.

"I think the whole school system needs to be reviewed in Red River Parish," Sessoms said.

Sessoms, who has two children at Red River Elementary, said she has no problems with her bus driver. "I have a wonderful bus driver," she added. Sessoms' request to have her young children sit near the front because of their ages was granted.

School Board member Gene Longino said Wednesday evening that he had not heard about the situation involving the nine children.

"I don't know anything about that. "» Until something formally comes to the School Board members through the superintendent, we don't know the details," Longino said.

School Board President Ricky Cannon was at work Wednesday evening and unavailable for comment. Board member J.B. McElwee also was not at home. Calls to the homes of Cleve Miller, Kassandria Wells White, Karen Womack and Jessie Webber were not answered.

...black people voluntarily go to the back of the bus anyways (...just a musing while on Marta)

I'm FED UP with DELL!

...I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 notebook...which is pretty decent for me, as a college student. I got for $500 back in August (2005). I also had high-speed Comcast internet (actually, I didn't pay for this one, but I'll get into that later).

Everything is working nicely, up until December of last year. I'm unable to get onto the internet, which I need espeically for school purposes. I call the Dell people, get transferred about 50 million times, and they tell me that I need to talk to my ISP, which is Comcast. I call Comcast...the woman tells me to clear my cookies, check this, check that, etc., still nothing. She informs me that I need to talk with Dell...that I may have an "internal problem" that should be fixed. Didn't I just call those fuckers? *sigh*

I was hoping to get it fixed by this semester, but screw it. Since I was unable to get online, I just let Comcast cancel it. Plus my "20 bucks for 3 months" deal was up anyways. If I can't log on, I sure as hell aint paying for no internet. Back to square one.

Three keys on my keyboard popped off, so I call Dell....tell them what the Comcast lady said....tell them about my popped keys....I have to REPLACE the ENTIRE keyboard! I ask how much....10 bucks...I'm cool....Dell guy tells me that it's a "self" type of thing---they'll sent it along with instructions, and I can install it myself. I'm like, cool. He tells me there's nothing he can do about my "internal problems" unless I have the internet. Well they'd better fix my shit within 24 hours. That's my logic *sigh*. This was Sunday.

Come Monday, my keyboard arrives in the mail. Guess what's missing? THE FUCKING INSTRUCTIONS! *sigh*...once again, I call the Dell people....it goes a little like this:

Robot: thank you for calling Dell. We love serving you....all of our representatives are currently serving other customers...please wait on the line for the next available representative.....BEEP BEEP

Me: 99 bottles of beer on the wall.....99 bottles of beer..

....I wait a good 15 minutes before I'm connected to a human. and that so called "classical" music was hurting my damn ears. I would rather hear nothing than to hear that. At LEAST play some Jazz. Sheesh.

Dude: thank you for calling DELL. My name is *Dave*. To verify your account, may I have your first and last name?

Me: WTF? Sure, um...(I tell him my name)

Dude: Kesha? how do you spell that?

Me: *sigh* K-E-S-H-A......no I

Dude: mm hmm...now what's your address and telephone number?

Me: WTF ....*i tell the info*

Dude: ok....*type type type*....and what's your service tag number, and express service code?

Me: *struggles to locate info*...um,....*i tell info*

Dude: thank you. Now Ms. Kesha, what seems to be the problem?

....up to this point, I was on the line for about 8 minutes. I explain my problem.

Dude: oh um....well...we don't handle Inspiron 1200's. I'm gonna have to transfer you.

Me: WTFFFFFFFF! *Sigh*

...he transfers me...Like a fucking raggedy CD, I repeat the same shit. And guess what? THEY TRANSFER ME AGAIN!

...I'm on the line for 45 minutes at this point, when I say, FUCK IT! How about letting me speak first instead of asking 10,000,000 questions, only to not be able to help me? And how about letting a HUMAN answer the phone? I can't talk to no fucking ROBOT!
